roman bride at Tavira click for bigger picture in new windowTavira is a charming town with a long history. It is one of the most architecturally attractive towns on the Algarve.

A roman Bridge links the two parts of the town across the River Gilao and around this area are lots of intimate restaurants and bars /cafes, some having superb views over the river. From here you also have views up to the castle and landmark clock tower of the church of Santa Maria do Castello, well worth the short walk.

However, you can walk from one side of Tavira to the other in about 15 minutes or take a tour of the whole town by miniature train, which from experience the children will really enjoy. The more romantic among us can even hire a beautiful horse drawn carriage. There are many small and traditional Portuguese restaurants specialising in locally caught fish along with plenty of international restaurant or bistro choices.
